Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Monday in a live-streamed conversation on subjects like artificial intelligence (AI), free speech, and more. Most prominently, the two parties discussed the emerging landscape of AI and how to mitigate potential risks from the technology.

Netanyahu live-streamed the roughly 40-minute conversation, which took place in San Francisco, California, on X on Monday morning. The meeting was a part of a series of discussions Netanyahu plans to have with world AI leaders.

During the conversation, Netanyahu asked Musk how he thought the global rewards of AI could be maximized while minimizing its potential risks.

“I’ve actually met with a number of world leaders to talk about AI risk, because I think for a lot of people, unless you’re really invested in the technology, you don’t know just how significant the risk can be,” Musk responded.

Elon Musk: AI poses a ‘civilizational risk’ if not regulated

Musk and Netanyahu also discussed various applications of AI, including potential uses like senior care and precision agriculture. Additionally, Musk noted that AI might look different than some people imagine, highlighting the massive, heat-producing data centers required to power artificial general intelligence (AGI) systems.

“If you see a movie like, say, Terminator, the intelligence appears to be in the robot,” Musk said. “But actually, the intelligence is in large data centers, large server centers. And you see some of these data centers, you just see computers, like, you can practically see the curvature of the Earth. That’s how long the corridors are.”

Musk described the “gigantic, massive warehouses” that are needed to house these kinds of servers, saying that, in some cases, these buildings could hold hundreds of thousands of computers. He went on to explain that this is what would be needed for “extreme digital superintelligence.”

Hundreds of protestors also gathered outside the San Francisco meeting, criticizing Netanyahu’s recent judicial overhaul plan, which seeks to cancel a key “reasonableness standard” in the country. When the meeting was first announced, Musk said he got “the most amount of negative pushback from people at Tesla about this interview than anything else” he has done in the past.

In the meeting, Netanyahu also asked Musk to condemn anti-semitism within the confines of free speech, commenting that free speech was a “foundational” part of democracy. The question came after the Tesla CEO threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League in recent weeks over a study claiming that X has seen a rise in hate speech since Musk took over.

“I hope you find within the confines of the First Amendment, the ability to stop not only anti-semitism, or roll it back as best you can, but any collective hatred of a people that anti-semitism represents,” Netanyahu said. “And I know you’re committed to that, and I hope you succeed in it. It’s not an easy task, but I encourage you and urge you to find the balance — it’s a tough one.”

“I’m sort of against attacking any group,” Musk responded. “Doesn’t matter who it is, I’m in favor of that which furthers civilization and which ultimately leads us to become a space-faring civilization, where we understand the nature of the universe.”

“We can’t do that if there’s a lot of infighting and hatred and negativity, so obviously I’m against antisemitism,” Musk added.

Following the one-on-one meeting, Netanyahu and Musk also had an AI roundtable discussion with OpenAI President Greg Brockman and MIT physicist Max Tegmark, which was also streamed on X.

Elon Musk was among a number of top technology executives who met at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday for a Senate forum discussing artificial intelligence (AI). During the private discussion, Musk reportedly echoed warnings of the threat AI poses to humanity if action is not taken to regulate the emerging technology.

Musk warned lawmakers that AI could pose a “civilizational risk” if not regulated, according to Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo) in a report from NBC News. Lummis said she wrote the phrase down in her notebook after being struck by it, later showing it to a pair of reporters.

Other tech executives attending the forum included Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, Alphabet (Google) CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and more. The meeting was not open to the public, and in addition to the executives, labor leaders and civil rights organizations that were invited, over 60 senators attended.

The news comes after Musk joined several other industry professionals in signing a call to pause development of certain AI systems earlier this year. Altman did not sign the letter, though he later went on to help pen an OpenAI document calling for increased governance over superintelligent systems.

Alongside efforts at Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, The Boring Company and X, Musk also launched xAI earlier this year, which is an AI startup that says it intends to “understand the true nature of the universe.”

Following the meeting, Musk spoke with CNBC reporters outside the Capitol as he left, noting that attendees were nearly all in agreement that steps needed to be taken toward regulating AI.

“This meeting may go down in history as being very important for the future of civilization,” Musk said.

When asked if he thought legislation would come out of this meeting, Musk answered “probably,” though he isn’t sure what the timeframe for such legislation would look like. Additionally, Musk said in the interview that nearly everyone raised their hands when Schumer asked who was in favor of regulation on AI development, which he called a “good sign.”

Reporters also pressed Musk on what kind of action the Senate might take in response to the forum. While he declined to know exactly what the government would do, he alluded to the past creation of regulatory agencies, later saying that “perhaps” a separate department of AI could be created.

Before leaving, Musk was asked if he thought AI would destroy humanity. Musk responded, “There is some chance that is above zero that AI will kill us all. I think it’s low.”

“But if there’s some chance, I think we should also consider the fragility of human civilization.”

Elon Musk called for a pause in the development of artificial intelligence once again on Friday when speaking at the VivaTech conference in Paris, warning people of the dangers of AI if it is not regulated.

Musk has been a proponent of more refined regulation in terms of AI development for several years. Dating back to 2017, he has pushed for there to be guidelines for it moving forward, as the overdevelopment before regulations are set could be detrimental to the human race.

“I have exposure to the most cutting-edge AI, and I think people should be really concerned about it,” Musk said at the National Governors Association meeting in 2017. “I keep sounding the alarm bell, but until people see robots going down the street killing people, they don’t know how to react because it seems so ethereal.”

Tesla has gone on to start developing its own Bot, which Musk unveiled last year, claiming it will be able to simplify human life by taking care of monotonous and boring tasks.

However, he is still quite convinced that the development of AI should begin slowing down well before an adequate regulatory process is established. The White House came out with its own Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights: A Vision for Protecting Our Civil Rights in the Algorithmic Age in late 2022, which described five key principles for keeping humans safe during AI development.

Biden’s AI “bill of rights” is a baby step toward Elon Musk’s call for AI regulation

Musk continued this narrative last week during his speech, stating there are potential dangers for humans if AI development moves forward without regulations.

“There is a real danger for digital superintelligence having negative consequences,” Musk said (via Reuters). “And so if we are not careful with creating artificial general intelligence, we could have potentially a catastrophic outcome.”

“I am in favor of AI regulation because I think it is a risk to the public. And anything that’s a risk to the public, there needs to be some kind of referee, that referee is the regulator.”

Musk’s first appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast several years ago yielded a similar conversation, where he discussed his fear of AI overdevelopment.

Friday, he said he believes there should be a hiatus in AI development until there is regulation.

“I just want to say, I think we should pause.”

Hyundai announced today that it has developed an Automatic Charging Robot (ACR) that is similar to a design Tesla showed off a few years ago. The EV charging robot communicates with the car and will charge the vehicle without the driver having to get out.

The ACR uses a one-arm system that will automatically plug an EV charging cable into an electric vehicle.

In the demonstration video, an IONIQ 6 parks in a charging bay, and the AC communicates with the car to open the charging door and calculates the exact location of the port. This is done through a camera that is mounted inside.

The ACR will complete the entire charging process on its own from start to finish, never needing the driver or vehicle operator for help.

Hyundai said it plans to use the ACR to make charging easier and more streamlined, including for those who have trouble moving due to disabilities.

“The ACR will help to make EV-charging easier and more convenient, especially in dark environments. It will also improve accessibility, particularly for people with mobility barriers, as charging cables become thicker and heavier to enable high-speed charging,” Hyundai’s Head of Robotics Lab, Dong Jin Hyun, said. “We will continue developing the ACR for increased safety and more convenience so that all EV customers can soon benefit from using it at charging stations.”

Elon Musk has said that Tesla will utilize an “automatic snake charger” for its vehicles, which has been on display for several years. In October 2020, Musk said that we would eventually see it put into action.

The prototype was originally unveiled in 2015 and Musk confirmed it wasn’t just a one-time thing. However, we haven’t heard many more developments since its original unveiling, but Tesla has decided to dive head-first into AI and far past vehicle autonomy.

The Tesla Bot has been in development, and who knows what could come of it. However, the initial unveiling of the Tesla Bot showed it will be capable of handling household chores and everyday activities that humans might just find taxing and annoying.

Check out Hyundai’s ACR below:

Through its collaboration with Microsoft, General Motors (GM) is exploring the use of ChatGPT in its future vehicles.

Like its partner Microsoft, GM believes the AI chatbot could revolutionize how people interact with technology in their everyday lives, including their cars. “ChatGPT is going to be in everything,” says GM Vice President Scott Miller in a comment to Reuters. Now, the automaker is exploring using the technology in future vehicles.

GM has not been specific regarding the functionality ChatGPT could add to its vehicles, but from the limited examples provided, it is certainly promising. Not only could ChatGPT vastly improve vehicle voice commands but it could be used in conjunction with home and phone integration to allow significantly more and more useful commands. Everything from “open my garage door” to “plan a route to the doctor’s office and reserve a charging spot for me when I get there” could be implemented.

GM quickly pointed out that ChatGPT could do much more than simple voice commands. By integrating with more emerging technologies, GM believes ChatGPT could help its vehicles feel fresh and new for longer.

Strangely, this is a unique approach to using AI in the automotive space. Numerous automakers, including Tesla, are primarily focused on implementing AI within autonomous driving, but few have explored its use in infotainment or customer experiences. But this might not be the case for long.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is reportedly assembling a team of AI researchers to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a project he previously helped co-found. It should be noted that no official announcements regarding this team or project have been made.

As AI continues to become an essential part of our everyday lives, it is only a matter of time before it integrates with our vehicles. And while that effort currently circles around its implementation in autonomous driving, GM and ChatGPT show that won’t be the case forever.

Ford has unveiled its new AI-focused subsidiary, Latitude, focusing on “hands-free, eyes-off-the-road” autonomous driving solutions.

Ford CEO Jim Farley has previously stated that there is no better product to sell to consumers than time; more time with family, more time to relax, etc. And he has made it clear that he intends to do just that by selling vehicles with autonomous driving capabilities. Ford’s new subsidiary, Latitude, will work on that problem.

Ford claims that drivers spend “nearly 100 hours a year sitting in traffic,” an unpleasant, stressful, and time-consuming activity that benefits nobody. In response, Ford introduced its BlueCruise level 2 autonomous driving solution, which has already accumulated over 50 million miles since launch, but Ford’s ambitions are higher.

The Blue Oval’s newest venture, Latitude, is focused on level 3 autonomous driving, allowing a driver to let go of the wheel and completely take their eyes off the road.

“We see automated driving technology as an opportunity to redefine the relationship between people and their vehicles,” said Doug Field, chief advanced product development and technology officer of Ford. “Customers using BlueCruise are already experiencing the benefits of hands-off driving. The deep experience and talent in our Latitude team will help us accelerate the development of all-new automated driving technology…”

This isn’t Ford’s first entry into level 3 autonomy, but it will hopefully be its most successful. Ford’s previous venture, working with Volkswagen Group, much like GM’s Cruise subsidiary, was focused on creating a LiDAR/AI-based autonomous taxi service that could serve customers in America’s largest cities. However, that initial project failed, with the American automaker selling off its share late last year.

Ford is far from the only legacy automaker focusing on introducing autonomous driving to the mass market. Long-time competitor General Motors operates both the aforementioned Cruise taxi service and its own proprietary software, Super Cruise. However, Stellantis, lagging behind its big-three siblings, has yet to invest similarly.

Clear leaders in the field of autonomy have already appeared in the United States. Tesla has taken the market by storm with its Autopilot and more advanced Full-Self-Driving systems. Simultaneously, another upmarket competitor, Mercedes-Benz, has become the first company to operate level 3 autonomous vehicles in the States, backed by a promise of legal liability.

In short, Ford is far from leading the category in terms of autonomy, but with so many automakers yet to invest, Ford is part of a select few headed on a clear path forward. Hopefully, that mindset, and its new subsidiary, will allow the historic company to compete well in the coming years.

Elon Musk is in the process of searching for AI researchers to join a team to create a ChatGPT competitor.

If OpenAI has proven anything over the past 2-3 months, it is that AI can be profitable and doesn’t have to be an unending research project without market implementation. This sudden realization not only attracted the investment of Microsoft but has reinvigorated traditional rivals Google, Amazon, and others. Now, according to a leaked report from The Information, Elon Musk is looking to get back into the mix.

Elon Musk, a co-founder of the OpenAI non-profit in 2015, has since distanced himself from the project, leaving its Board of Directors in 2018. Since then, he has shared a mix of admiration and skepticism regarding OpenAI’s first massively successful project, ChatGPT. At one point, Musk called the venture “scary good” but has since criticized Microsoft’s implementation of the product in its Bing search engine.

The Information reports that Musk has since taken to Silicon Valley in search of AI researchers to join his team. One such researcher, ex-Google AI project leader Igor Bubuschkin, was reportedly approached by Musk but has yet to “officially sign on.”

Elon Musk has not officially announced his intention to start this potential AI project, though it would not be his only company focusing on the technology. Tesla is currently the clear leader in the auto industry in implementing artificial intelligence, while Twitter, Musk’s most recent acquisition, has previously worked with AI in the social media space.

It remains unclear how Musk intends to use his AI project, but there are certainly plenty of use cases within his numerous companies; Tesla, Twitter, and SpaceX. But what is clear is that his window of entering the market is rapidly closing as other competitors scoop up top researching talent.

Despite numerous layoffs in Tech over the past four months, a hiring frenzy has surrounded the AI world, showing how interested many tech companies are.

Sam Altman, another co-founder and current CEO of OpenAI, has yet to react to this explosion of interest and has not commented on Musk’s potential project either. However, with his investment from Microsoft, others, and his team, Altman likely has his hands full as his now flourishing organization takes a strong leadership position in the market.

Porsche has revitalized its ROADS driving app, giving it the ability to create scenic drives using artificial intelligence.

Perhaps more than the fans of any other brand, Porsche enthusiasts love driving their cars. The iconic German brand has a history of creating fun and engaging vehicles that compel you to drive them and make you feel like part of a community when you do. In this same pursuit, Porsche launched its ROADS app back in 2019. But with a recent software update giving the app AI assistance, it has doubled down on its mission to get people to enjoy their drives.

The ROADS app started as a relatively simple premise. No matter your vehicle or brand of choice, you could log in to the app, track your favorite drives, and share them with a global community. Other users could then use Porsche ROADS to direct them along the same route. But now, the app has gone further by suggesting routes using artificial intelligence.

“The centerpiece of the new ROADS app is the generator for scenic routes,” says Robert Ader, Chief Marketing Officer at Porsche AG. “It allows driving fans to find their own individual dream route with just a few clicks. AI works out a suitable route based on various parameters such as the curves of the road, the topography, landscape features, or exciting points of interest. From their starting point, the user can plan a circuit route or navigate to a specific destination – no matter where in the world they are.”

Porsche ROADS Porsche ROADS

Compared to a traditional route planning app, Porsche’s ROADS will not get you there quickly, directly, or avoiding tolls, but it will get you there with a smile on your face.

After hearing so much praise for the new app online, I had to try it myself. When you start the app, it asks you two basic questions; how long do you want to go, and in what direction do you wish to travel? From there, it showed me a series of options where I could help the AI find the best route for me.

Looking at the community section, I was surprised, considering the modest 180,000 users that use the app, that numerous routes were already created around me, taking me to some of my favorite local parks and through some of the most beautiful landscapes in my area.

Tesla owners are a prime example of the passion for driving persisting in the electric vehicle age. With Porsche’s new app, the German automaker is showing that it is aiming to support that passion as it electrifies as well. And with more and more exciting EVs coming from the automaker, the electric future remains an exciting one.

Tesla’s former AI Director, Andrej Karpathy, was the latest guest on Lex Fridman’s podcast. Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI and Stanford educator, spoke with Fridman on a variety of topics, including AI, leaving Tesla, and even the meaning of life. For those who are considering learning more about machine learning, Karpathy has this advice to share.

“Beginners are often focused on what to do, and I think the focus should be more on how much you do. So, I am a believer on a high level in this 10,000 hours kind of concept where you just kind of have to pick the things where you can spend time, and you care about, and you’re interested in. You literally have to put in 10,000 hours of work.”

Karpathy emphasized that it’s the work that is the most important part.

“I feel like there’s some sense of determinism about being an expert about a thing if you spend 10,000 hours. You can literally pick an arbitrary thing, and I think if you spend 10,000 hours of deliberate effort and work, you actually become an expert at it.”

Karpathy’s work at Tesla was an important part of its technology development. After taking a sabbatical, he decided to part ways with the company, and Fridman asked him to share why he chose to leave.

When Karpathy announced he was leaving, he said it was a difficult decision and that he didn’t have any concrete plans. He wanted to spend more time revisiting his long-term passions around the technical work in AI, open source, and education.

“I think over time during those five years; I’ve kind of gotten myself into a little bit of a managerial position. Most of my days were, you know, meetings and growing the organization and making decisions about sort of high-level strategic decisions about the team and what it should be working on and so on.”

“And it’s kind of like a corporate executive role, and I can do it. I think I’m okay at it, but it’s not like fundamentally what I enjoy, and so I think when I joined, there was no computer vision team because Tesla was just going from the transition of using Mobileye, a third-party vendor, for all of its computer vision to having to build its computer vision system. So when I showed up, there were two people training deep neural networks.”

The last question Karpathy answered was about the meaning of life. Fridman recapped that the two were discussing how to get the creator of the universe to notice us. “We’ve talked about the universe having a conversation with us humans or with the systems we create, try to answer. For the creator of the universe to notice us, we’re trying to create systems that are loud enough to answer back.”

Karpathy pointed out that this may be the meaning of life for some people and shared his own thoughts. “Anyone can choose their own meaning of life because we are conscious entities and it’s beautiful.”

“I do think like a deeper meaning of life if someone is interested, are along the lines of like, ‘what the hell is all this?'”

The White House unveiled its AI “bill of rights” which is a baby step toward what Tesla CEO, Elon Musk has been suggesting for quite some time. It’s a baby step because it only offers a set of voluntary guidelines that companies developing or deploying AI can follow to better protect users. It doesn’t set any new restrictions or protections around the use of AI.

In 2020, Elon Musk tweeted that all organizations developing advanced AI should be regulated including Tesla. Elon Musk is well known for sharing his thoughts about the downside of AI.

In 2014 he said that it could be more dangerous than nukes and told attendees at a Massachusetts Institute of Technology  Aeronautics and Astronautics symposium that it was humanity’s largest existential threat and that humanity needs to be extremely careful.

In 2018, Elon Musk told Recode’s Kara Swisher that “we ought to have a government committee that starts off with insight, gaining insight. Spends a year or two gaining insight about AI or other technologies that are maybe dangerous, but especially AI.”

The White House’s Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights: A Vision for Protecting Our Civil Rights in the Algorithmic Age calls for companies voluntarily self-regulate the development and deployment  of advanced AI. It has five key principles:

  1. Safe and Effective Systems: You should be protected from unsafe or ineffective systems.
  2. Algorithmic Discrimination Protections: You should not face discrimination by algorithms and systems should be used and designed in an equitable way.
  3. Data Privacy: You should be protected from abusive data practices via built-in protections and you should have agency over how data about you is used.
  4. Notice and Explanation: You should know when an automated system is being used and understand how and why it contributes to outcomes that impact you.
  5. Human Alternatives, Consideration, and Fallback: You should be able to opt-out, where appropriate, and have access to a person who can quickly consider and remedy problems you encounter.

The Biden administration says that this set of principles is a blueprint to “empower people, companies, and policymakers across the United States and meet President Biden’s call to hold big technology accountable, protect the civil rights of Americans, and ensure technology is working for the American people.”
