I think there are some laws in some areas that could make that tricky. Also dash cams seem to be iterating pretty quickly in terms of technology so i’m not sure i’d want to be tied to what tesla put into the car for 7 years of video footage.

Thanks, looking forward to your detailed review. Amazon has a number of what appears to be the same product for vastly different prices. I found one that includes the Power Magic Pro that appears to be over $100 cheaper than the one in your link. The main difference seems to the size of the SD card but considering 64gb card can be had for about $35 that isn’t a big deal.

I’m not sure if I’m going to want to use it always on or just for when I’m driving as I’m guessing an always on approach will use up the card in day or less and I’d be concerned of overwriting something important.

We’ll be publishing a detailed review of the BlackVue DR650GW-2CH in the coming weeks which includes an installation overview. Our installation did not require the PowerMagic Pro as we opted to utilize an always-on approach as outlined here:

http://www.teslarati.com/how-to-tap-constant-12v-power-tesla-model-s/

We felt this was a great way to add 24/7 surveillance on the Model S even when the car was not in use. Power consumption is not of concern as our version of the BlackVue (http://amzn.to/1z1KPcp) had a built-in motion and G-sensor that activates the camera only when movement is detected.

We felt that the installation can be performed by any DIY saavy consumer.

Stay tuned …

I’m not very technical so perhaps an estimate on what a local shop would charge to do it would be helpful and if you are using that PowerMagic Pro that most of the Amazon listings come with. Thanks.

I see a lot of people crossing the A-pillar bag with dash cam power cords. Dangerous.

Btw I have a blackvue 550 dual channel in my Model S. Works great!

Since the Autopilot Model S already has its own cameras front and rear, I guess it is only a question of time before we see a dash cam app that renders standalone dashcams obsolete. What do you think?
