During the Run on Less event, which was organized by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency, a Tesla Semi operated by PepsiCo Inc. traveled 1,076 miles in a single day with three relatively brief 750-kW fast charging sessions. The charging sessions brought the Tesla Semi’s charge to roughly 47%, then 89%, and then 52%. 

More importantly, PepsiCo said 60% of the miles driven by the Tesla Semi over the 18 days were with a gross vehicle weight of more than 70,000 pounds. That’s pretty close to the 82,000-pound limit for Class 8 trucks like the Tesla Semi, and a typical weight for the logistics industry, as noted in an Automotive News report. 

The Tesla Semi also outperformed its peers at the Run on Less event for the average number of miles traveled per day. Amanda DeVoe, director of PepsiCo’s fleet transformation and strategy, noted that the company was quite happy with the Tesla Semi’s performance. 

“When we looked at the metrics during the run, we were very pleased with how the Semi performs. What was most meaningful is that the Semi aligned with how our business operates,” DeVoe said. 

John Boesel, CEO of Calstart, a clean transportation organization, praised Tesla Semi’s charging capabilities. “Tesla is the leader in terms of performance and range. They are also the only ones demonstrating superfast charge capability,” Boesel said. 

Overall, PepsiCo’s best-performing Tesla Semi traveled an average of 574 miles per day over the course of 18 days. The next best non-Tesla vehicle was WattEV’s Nikola Tre BEV, which traveled an average of 255 miles per day. OK Produce’s Freightliner eCascadia averaged 181 miles per day, and the Performance Team’s best-performing Volvo VNR Electric averaged 175 miles per day.

Tesla is still ramping up production of the Semi, but it is expected to play a major role in the transition to sustainability if the EV maker is able to ramp its production properly. California has already approved the Advanced Clean Fleets regulation, which will phase out internal combustion engine truck sales by 2036, so the opportunity is definitely there.

Mercedes unveiled the eActros 600 on Tuesday, set to go on sale near the end of this year, according to the automaker (via Bloomberg). The electric semi and Tesla Semi competitor will feature a range of 500 kilometers (311 miles) per charge while carrying as much as 22 tons in cargo. It’s expected to take just 30 minutes to charge from 20 to 80 percent, which the company says is roughly equal to the electricity needed to power approximately 1,000 households.

In the announcement, Mercedes-Benz Trucks Chief Executive Officer Karin Rådström said that the high price of eActros 600 production compared to its diesel trucks was a drawback for the vehicle. However, she added that operating the electric semi-truck would be less costly than operating diesel versions.

Another drawback, according to Rådström in an interview with Bloomberg, is the lack of availability of a charging infrastructure for semi-trucks. She also noted that less range is needed to accommodate about 60 percent of the trucking routes in Europe.

“It’s the most challenging part of the equation,” Rådström said, referring to the need to build out charging networks for trucking.

Hydrogen-powered semi-trucks will also play a role in the decarbonization of the hauling industry, according to Rådström, ahead of a European Union (EU) goal to phase out the sale of gas vehicles.

The news comes as fellow Tesla Semi rival Nikola said this month that it plans to begin delivering its first hydrogen trucks in a few weeks, representing 23 different customers that have ordered the trucks across 223 non-binding agreements.

Last year, PepsiCo received initial deliveries of the Tesla Semi in its first order of the semi-trucks, spread across two different California facilities. Although the Mercedes eActros 600 is initially destined for the European market, it also represents just the second electric semi to head to any market, following the Tesla Semi.

The new law, which was announced earlier this month, increases the maximum width of trucks by 50 mm to 2.55 meters. This was, at least, if they were equipped with advanced safety systems. The Tesla Semi fits this bill, as the Class 8 all-electric truck is outfitted with a variety of active and passive safety features. 

As noted in a report from Drive.au, Tesla Australia had previously lobbied the government to make the change, as the country’s existing 2.5-meter width limit prevented the company from bringing the Tesla Semi to market. Tesla Australia’s Public Policy Manager Sam McLean highlighted this in December 2020. 

“The clearest immediate barrier from Tesla’s perspective is Australia’s 2500mm width limit in ADR 43/04. The Commission will be aware that given Australia’s small size in comparison to global markets, inconsistencies like this between Australian regulations and larger markets will delay or preclude vehicles coming to local markets. 

“Currently, Australia will likely miss out on the first generation of electric heavy vehicles such as the Tesla Semi because of this,” McLean noted. 

While Australia appears to have opened the door for vehicles like the Tesla Semi, there may be more challenges that the electric vehicle maker may face. The Tesla Semi’s center driving seat may still need to be evaluated if it complies with Australian Design Rules (ADR). 

James Stewart, road safety expert and director of advanced driver-training firm Driving Solutions, warned that Australia’s road systems must be upgraded first before larger vehicles are allowed. 

“It’s smart to get electric vehicles on the roads, but the road system has to be upgraded accordingly – sooner or later, Australia needs to go to a standardized road width. The biggest issue is the size of the road. When you’re talking motorways, you can get away with it (the proposed regulation changes) fairly easily, but when you start looking at most of the rural roads in Australia, they’re not built for that size,” Stewart said.

Priestley provided insights and details about the Tesla Semi while appearing on Jay Leno’s Garage. Among them were updates on Tesla Semi production. He also hinted that Tesla would update the all-electric Class 8 truck’s design before volume production. 

“We’ve made a few dozens of it; we’re up in the maybe 60-70 range, but we’re cranking out just our pilot volume,” Priestley told Leno. “We’re collecting data, we’re getting a lot of really great driver feedback, and then we’re going to take that time to do a bunch of improvements and bring that into a high volume and really try to be a major player in the market.”

Tesla delivered its first Semi Class 8 truck in December 2022 to PepsiCo. At the time, one question lingered: would the Tesla Semi live up to the hype?

In the recent Run on Less EV trucking study, the Tesla Semi finished off strong by traveling 1,076 miles in a single day. On that day, the Tesla Semi made one delivery but spent about 82% of the time driving, mostly at 50 miles per hour. 

In his interview with Jay Leno, Priestley noted that the Tesla Semi can recover 70% of its charge in 30 minutes. He also shared that Tesla has the Semi deliver battery packs from its Gigafactory in Nevada to California, adding that the all-electric Class 8 truck has matched the capabilities of diesel trucks. 

“So we really wanted to set it up to drop and do as many existing operations as we can. And the flagship one for us is we’re using this to haul our battery packs from our Factory in Reno down to California,” Priestley told Leno. 

“And we’re slotting in one for one with diesel trucks. It’s the exact same load, it’s the exact same route, they’re running the exact same operation, and that’s a huge sign of success for us that means that we’ve made a really capable truck,” he elaborated.

On Monday, Leno shared the new episode on his YouTube channel Jay Leno’s Garage, during which he hauls a Tesla Semi with another Tesla Semi. He also talks to Tesla’s Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen and Senior Manager of Semi Engineering Dan Priestley about the Semi’s design and some design elements behind the truck’s creation.

The nearly 43-minute video spans a broad range of topics, notably including that the Semi offers up to 1,500 horsepower and uses the same drive inverter as the Cybertruck. Additionally, Priestley explains that the idea for an electric Semi came from former executive and current board member J.B. Straubel, who said that Tesla shouldn’t be shipping EVs with diesel trucks.

About 20 minutes into the discussion, Leno hops into the Semi’s cab with Priestley and von Holzhausen to continue the conversation. After a few minutes, von Holzhausen leaves, and Priestley and Leno head out without a trailer attached.

After a short drive, Priestley and Leno attach a trailer with the second Semi to the back, giving the two a stark comparison point to show exactly how it feels to drive while hauling. Throughout the drive, Leno notes how smooth and quick the Semi feels compared to other large trucks.

Priestley goes on to talk about several themes related to the Semi’s design, including Tesla’s hopes to woo younger truck drivers with the vehicle. He also says a main goal of Tesla’s was to increase safety by making the Semi powerful enough to keep up with traffic easily compared to normal semi-trucks. Priestley also notes that the Semi has roughly the same turn radius as a Model 3 or Model Y, with Leno demonstrating as the two perform a full U-turn at an intersection.

The Semi is highlighting a major study into commercial logistics and electric vehicles called Run on Less, a three-week-long event that assesses the performance of 21 electric trucks. The event was geared toward helping gain an in-depth understanding of both the advantages and challenges of EV trucking as the commercial sector begins to adopt sustainable Class 8 vehicles more proactively.

The Semi was the keynote vehicle, and three units were to be assessed during the event, along with several other commercial vehicles, including Ford E-Transit vans, a Freightliner Cascadia, a Volvo VNR, and a GM BrightDrop.

One of the more impressive tallies through the event was given by the Semi when it trekked 794 miles in one day and followed it up with a similar performance the following day, accounting for 1,600 miles of logistics in just two travel days for the Semi. In terms of local routes, this is impressive.

However, on the final day of the event, the Tesla Semi managed to beat the already impressive 800-mile days by traveling 1,076 miles in a single day while making only one delivery but managing to spend nearly 82 percent of its time driving.

11.1 percent of the time spent was charging, according to data from the Run on Less site, which was published daily.

“A Tesla Semi (fully-electric semi-truck) covered 1000 miles yesterday. Congrats to the team that helped make this vehicle possible. This is just the beginning; electric trucks will continue to replace dirty, polluting diesel trucks over the coming years,” Evan Chenoweth, a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer for the Tesla Semi, said.

The Semi also spent most of its time traveling at speeds of at least 50 miles per hour, according to data. 92.6 percent of the total travel time was spent at these speeds, while just 3.82 percent was spent between 40 and 50 MPH. 2.41 percent was spent between 20 and 39 MPH, and 0 to 19 MPH made up the remainder of the time.

The impressive nature of this traveling would prove that EV trucking is definitely capable of massive routes that are still considered to be local or daily. 1,000 miles in a day is definitely an incredible amount of coverage, and while there are likely not many instances where this 500-mile trek for a single delivery only to come back, it is comforting to know that it has been done by someone in this vehicle.

When Elon Musk unveiled the Tesla Semi way back in late 2017, he made it a point to highlight that the electric Class 8 truck would be a cut above its peers. One of the slides that were shown during the event caught the eye of social media users as it stated that the Tesla Semi will feature “BAMF performance.” 

“BAMF” typically means “bad *ss mother f**ker” on the internet, which is pretty much in line with Tesla’s humor. Based on the performance of the Tesla Semis at the 2023 Run on Less Electric Depot event so far, it would appear that such a description is indeed accurate for the vehicle. 

PepsiCo is testing three Tesla Semi units in the 2023 Run on Less Electric Depot event. One of the trucks, Tesla Semi #3, was tracked to have done 794 miles during its second day of tests. The following day, the Class 8 all-electric truck traveled a total of 806 miles. Interestingly enough, Mullaney noted that during the nearly 48-hour period and 1,600-mile journey, Tesla Semi #3 was continuously on the move. 

The Tesla Semis are not exactly running the routes with no load either. As per North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) ‘s Mike Roeth, the Tesla Semi trucks are hauling heavy loads. 

“We’re tracking the beverage. It’s impressive, a fairly heavy haul at nearly 80,000 pounds. It goes to one location and drops off soda, but maybe picks up some waters, goes to another location to drop off water but pick up Gatorade. We don’t really know the payload, (but) NACFE has verified that these are fairly fully loaded when they leave and stay fairly loaded. They’re not out there gaming Run on Less,” Roeth said. 

Mullaney noted that such performance is only made possible by the Tesla Semi’s battery. While Tesla has not shared the full specs of the vehicle’s battery, it is evident that the Semi can take high power charges for an extended period of time. 

“PepsiCo’s Tesla Semi #3 just did 1600 miles in a little less than 48 hours, with the truck pretty much continually moving outside three brief but fruitful charges (along with two range extending mini charges). It’s really that charging that unlocks this. The early morning charge on Day 3 gets 75% SOC in about an hour (from 5% to 80%). 

“That is remarkable. This isn’t just enabled by the 750 kW charger, but also the ability of the battery to take a high power charge for a long period of time. That ‘charge curve’ remaining very steep up to and beyond 80% SOC is what really unlocks the mileage we are seeing from this truck. In the old days, charging a battery like that would fry it in pretty short order,” Mullaney said.

Data from the Run for Less event hints at the capabilities of the Tesla Semi. Tesla’s Class-8 truck was put through the ringer at the event, operating on its maximum payload capacity and traveling up to 500 miles round trip.

Dave Mullaney from Rocky Mountain Institute shared some information from Tesla Semi runs. During Run for Less, GEOTAB and the NACFE collected data from three PepsiCo Tesla Semi trucks. Mullaney shared the results of each Tesla Semi’s performance from the first day.

Tesla Semi 1:

• 335 miles on a single charge over 8 hours. [The] day ended with 17.5% SOC left, good for a little bit of a buffer.
• [The] Truck was doing highway operations – driving 65% of the time with speed predominantly at 62 mph.

Tesla Semi 2:

• 227 miles over about 6 hours. [The] day ended with 27% SOC.
• Spent about half its time idle but mostly [at] highway speeds when driving

Note: This truck may have been loaded more heavily as it showed a somewhat shorter range than Truck 1.

Tesla Semi 3:

• 377 miles with SOC bottoming out at 1.6% – no buffer there!
• [A]lmost exclusively highway driving at 62 mph.

Based on the data he analyzed, Mullaney concluded that Tesla’s range estimates for the Semi were on point. He noted that there was still a lot about the Tesla Semi’s capabilities that is unknown. More tests would provide a better idea of the Tesla Semi’s capabilities.

“Takeaway is that the 350-mile truck is for real, but unknowns remain. Load weight wasn’t published, and weather was warm with low winds. If you want to push these things much beyond 350 in real-world operations, you will need opportunity charging to feel safe doing so. In future days, hopefully, the data will show interesting charging events so we can infer how much time that will take,” Mullaney stated in a LinkedIn post.

The NACFE’s event is called the Run on Less – Electric DEPOT, and it will track the performance and activity of the 21 electric trucks, including an in-depth understanding of the benefits and challenges of battery electric trucks. The event will also be looking at things like total electric energy and fuel for all trucks on each day, and what that will mean in total energy usage once all Class 8 trucks are converted to EVs.

• At OK Produce in Fresno, California, a Freightliner eCascadia and an Orange EV will be tracked in local fruit and vegetable deliveries and terminal tractor applications, respectively.
• At Penske’s Ontario, California location, a GM BrightDrop, a Navistar eMV and a Freightliner eCascadia, a light-, medium- and heavy-duty truck, will be followed.
• At PepsiCo’s Sacramento, California depot, two Tesla Semis will be tracked in heavy-load long-haul transport operations.
• At Performance Team’s Commerce, California location, two electric Volvo VNRs will be tracked conducting short-haul routes.
• At Purolator’s Richmond, British Columbia hub, a Class 6 Motiv step van and a Ford E-Transit will be tracked in business and residential package delivery.
• At Schneider’s South El Monte, California location, two Freightliner eCascadias operating in slip-seated drayage will be tracked.
• At UPS in Compton, California, a Freightliner Custom Chassis MT50e last mile step van and a Freightliner eCascadia in a middle mile duty cycle will both be tracked.
• At US Foods in La Mirada, California, two Freightliner eCascadias will be tracked in food delivery applications.
• At WattEV’s Long Beach, California location, a BYD 8TT tractor and a Nikola Tre BEV tractor operating at the Port of Long Beach will be tracked.

The NACFE’s Executive Director, Mike Roeth, said:

“As trucking works on decarbonizing, fleets are investing in more electric vehicles at their depots which brings with it many benefits but also some challenges, especially around infrastructure and charging. Yet leading fleets are tackling those challenges and are giving us access to their operations so we can share what they are learning with the rest of the industry.”

Of all twenty-one EVs that will be assessed, the Tesla Semi seems to be the vehicle that is at the forefront of the event.

The NACFE’s press release explicitly mentions the Semi, which there will be two units of in the assessment.

A recent sighting of a Tesla Semi, however, is a bit more special. As shared on social media platforms such as TikTok and X, formerly Twitter, a Tesla Semi has been spotted transporting a Tesla Cybertruck on a trailer. Another Tesla Semi was also nearby, though it seemed like it was not pulling a trailer at all.

Several interesting things stood out from the recent Tesla Semi and Cybertruck sighting. The Cybertruck’s size in particular was noticeable, as it consumed a notable portion of the Semi’s trailer. The Cybertruck also had a number of missing trim pieces, from its wheel wells to its rear light bar. Apparent scuffs on the all-electric pickup truck suggested that the Cybertruck was put through some hard testing as well. 

The deliveries of the Cybertruck are coming, and Tesla is putting in the effort to make sure that the all-electric pickup truck is as ready for real-world use as possible. This is one of the reasons why the Cybertruck is currently undergoing winter testing in New Zealand, and this is perhaps the reason why several units of the all-electric pickup truck that were spotted in the US recently looked like they were tested in muddy areas.

The Cybertruck is expected to not feature a single Tesla logo on its exterior, but it is so unique that its presence on public roads alone is already an advertisement for the electric vehicle maker. This was something that was described by Wall Street veteran and The Future Fund Managing Partner Gary Black, who noted that the Cybertruck would likely be a rolling billboard of sorts that points consumers to the Tesla brand. 

“It’s gonna start rolling across America like a rolling billboard, and people are gonna see it, and they will be like, “Wow, that’s real interesting,” and they’re gonna go to the website, and they’re gonna order a Model 3 or Model Y or Model S or Model X or a Cybertruck. And you’re gonna produce this whole halo effect, which is exactly what happened back in ’20 when the Model Y first came out,” Black said.
