Tesla is still in talks with Indonesia regarding a potential investment, the country’s President Joko Widodo said.

Tesla has been expanding its footprint on a global scale for several years, with the most recent pieces of evidence being its Gigafactories in China, Germany, and Mexico. The automaker has also launched its vehicles in several new markets over the past few years, bringing EVs to new countries.

However, only a few regions are in the running for potential investment from Tesla, whether it be for vehicle production or other operations, and Indonesia is one country that has been widely regarded as one of the biggest potential players for a facility from the electric automaker.

Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has been adamant for some time now on Tesla investing in his country. While Tesla just recently announced a new Gigafactory in 2023, which landed in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, CEO Elon Musk also said earlier this year that the company could potentially reveal another new location for investment this year.

Tesla’s potential investment in Indonesia gets vote of confidence from President Jokowi

However, the possibility of that seems relatively slim after Musk’s comments on Tesla’s most recent Earnings Call, where he spoke extensively regarding unfavorable macroeconomic conditions (via The Motley Fool):

“I’m not saying things will be bad. I’m just saying they might be. And I think like Tesla is an incredibly capable ship, but we need to make sure like as — if the macroeconomic conditions are stormy, even if the best ship is still going to have tough times.”

Musk also stated that Tesla would slow down its development of the Mexico factory:

“…in Mexico, we’re laying the groundwork to begin construction and doing all the long lead items, but I think we want to just get a sense for the global economy is like before we go full tilt on the Mexico factory. I am worried about the high interest rate environment that we’re in.”

Nevertheless, Widodo believes Tesla will still be investing in Indonesia based on recent talks he has held with the company’s brass. In an interview with Bloomberg, Widodo held out hopes that Tesla could still invest as he states Musk is still in talks with his government:

“Indonesia is still communicating with Tesla. We continue to communicate with Elon Musk. Yes, we’re still talking to Elon Musk.”

Widodo went on to talk about other companies that have already committed to Indonesian investments:

“But not only with Tesla. Now, the investors that have come include Hyundai. Next year, they will start producing electric vehicles that are made with entirely locally-sourced components. There is also BYD that wants to enter.”

Of course, Tesla has also held talks with India for the better part of a decade, but terms of an agreement have yet to be established as the automaker has been hoping to test demand through imports from China. The Indian government is not keen on the idea unless Tesla commits to building a factory first.

Tesla has launched a new color for the Model S and Model X, and they are calling it “Stealth Grey.”

This is the second new color Tesla has launched for the Model S and Model X in 2023, with the other being “Ultra Red,” which was added while Red Multicoat was removed.

Tesla has subsequently removed Midnight Grey for the Model S and Model X. Both Deep Red Multicoat and Midnight Grey are still available for the Model 3 and Model Y.

It is available for no additional charge.

The Stealth Grey is available in various markets, including the North American and Asian markets. Tesla European Design Studio is still currently showing Midnight Silver Metallic and not Stealth Grey.

Stealth Grey is already offered in Gigafactory Shanghai on the Model 3, and has been spotted on several vehicles en route to their destination.

Tesla has offered different colors in different markets depending on the paint shop that operates at the factory the vehicle is coming from. For example, Midnight Cherry Red and Quicksilver are two colors that are only available at Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin production facility in Germany and are only available on the Model Y.

CEO Elon Musk has said that these colors are only possible in Germany due to the Berlin plant’s world-class paint shop.

Stealth Grey joins Pearl White Multi-Coat, Solid Black, Deep Blue Metallic, and Ultra Red as colors available for the Model S and Model X.

Tesla has launched Model 3+ “Highland” deliveries in another European country, as drivers in the Netherlands have confirmed they have started accepting delivery of the newly-designed sedan this morning.

After Tesla launched the Model 3+ several months ago, deliveries officially began earlier this month. This ended months of speculation on when the automaker would finally hand over the newly-improved Model 3 to customers.

Deliveries had already started in other countries as early as mid-October. Countries in Europe and the Middle East have already seen several Highland Model 3 units make their way to customers. The Netherlands is now the next country to mark deliveries for the new Model 3.

Tesla updated several exterior and interior designs and features for the new Model 3, ramping up production late last month at Gigafactory Shanghai, where the car is currently produced.

The first delivery in Europe occurred in Germany, but Tesla has been spreading the new Model 3 around to various countries on the continent, including France and Poland.

However, a tsunami of Model 3 Highland deliveries is overtaking the European market as Tesla has been exporting the vehicles from China to Europe.

A Tesla Model 3 Highland tsunami is starting in European markets

The new Model 3 arrived just in time for Q4, as Tesla is working toward its lofty goal of reaching 1.8 million vehicle deliveries for 2023. With deliveries beginning in the Eastern Hemisphere already, the Model 3 Highland is sure to help bring Tesla closer to its goal for the year.

The Netherlands was one of the last countries where we saw Model 3 Highland testing going on before the vehicle was launched. A Teslarati reader sent us photographs of a Model 3 Highland driving on highways near local Tesla Service Centers and Showrooms in the Netherlands.

The Tesla Model Y may not be as quick as the Model S and Model X or as nimble around the track as the Model 3, but it does offer a good balance between cost, features, performance, and tech. It is this combination that has allowed the Model Y to become Tesla’s best-selling vehicle today. And during Q1 this year, the Model Y actually became the world’s best-selling car, period.

The Model Y’s momentum is still going strong in Europe. As per reports, the all-electric crossover is positioned to finish September as Europe’s top-selling vehicle, electric or otherwise. With this, the Model Y has earned the title for the sixth time in nine months, as noted in an Automotive News Europe report.

What is quite interesting is that the Model Y was able to achieve this feat despite the vehicle seeing a decline in sales. As per preliminary figures from market research firm Dataforce, the demand for the Model Y crossover slipped 8.4% to 26,370. In a way, the fact that the Model Y still became Europe’s best-selling vehicle in September despite a sales slowdown speaks of the vehicle’s strength in the market.

The Tesla Model Y may be the company’s most popular vehicle, but the company is not sitting on its laurels. This became quite evident in Gigafactory Shanghai, which recently rolled out a minor update to the Tesla Model Y that introduced new wheels, a new dash, and ambient lights to the all-electric crossover.

Speculations are high, however, that Tesla is also developing “Project Juniper,” which is reportedly the Model Y equivalent of the Model 3’s Highland update. Previous reports have suggested that Project Juniper would be rolled out sometime next year.

Considering the popularity of the Model Y, it is no surprise that it is the vehicle that is currently being produced in multiple countries. To date, the Model Y is being produced at the Fremont Factory, Gigafactory Texas, Gigafactory Shanghai, and Gigafactory Berlin. Giga Beriln’s deployment and Model Y production ramp has been helping the company meet the vehicle’s demand in Europe.

The drought of domestic Tesla Model 3 deliveries in China is over. As per a recent announcement from the electric vehicle maker on Chinese social media, customer deliveries of the upgraded Tesla Model 3, better known in EV circles as Project Highland, have begun.

Tesla China’s announcement on Weibo highlighted some of the new Model 3’s improvements, from its integrated taillights and new “light wing headlights” in the exterior to the RGB ambient lighting and ventilated seats in the interior. Tesla China also highlighted that the updated Model 3 features a new suspension system that should make the vehicle more comfortable.

The upgraded Model 3 was unveiled in China on September 1. At the time, the vehicle was offered for pre-sales in the country, and it was only until October 19 that formal sales of the new Model 3 were started in China. Despite the vehicle being formally available for ordering, however, the revamped all-electric sedan’s local customer deliveries were still paused. That pause ended today with Tesla’s announcement on Weibo.

Tesla China currently offers two variants of the upgraded Model 3 — the base Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) variant that starts at RMB 259,900 (about $35,500) and the Dual Motor All Wheel Drive (AWD) variant that starts at RMB 295,900 (about $40,400). Prior to the Highland update, the Model 3 in China started at RMB 231,900 (about $31,700) for the RWD version. A Performance variant was also offered at RMB 331,900 (about $45,300).

A document released by the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology revealed some details about the revamped all-electric sedan. These include the new Model 3’s battery pack sizes, which were listed at 60 kWh for the RWD variant and 78.4 kWh for the Dual Motor AWD. Tesla China’s order page for the upgraded Model 3 also lists an estimated delivery date of 6-9 weeks for new orders of the vehicle.

For now, the upgraded Tesla Model 3 is exclusively produced at Gigafactory Shanghai, the company’s largest factory by output and primary vehicle export hub. In Tesla’s Q3 2023 Update Letter, Giga Shanghai was listed with an estimated annual capacity of over 950,000 vehicles. That’s quite a lot of Model 3 sedans that could be produced both for the domestic Chinese market and foreign territories.

It appears that Tesla’s fourth-quarter delivery numbers would be bolstered pretty well by the updated Model 3, better known in EV circles as Project Highland. Based on social media posts from electric vehicle enthusiasts, it appears that a Model 3 Highland tsunami is starting in Europe.

The new Tesla Model 3 is so far only being produced in Gigafactory Shanghai, the company’s primary vehicle export hub. Fortunately, the facility is also Tesla’s largest factory by output, with the EV maker listing the site with an estimated annual output of over 950,000 vehicles in its Q3 2023 Update Letter. It was then no surprise to see Giga Shanghai exporting batches of new Model 3 over the past weeks.

Some of these vehicles have arrived in Europe, at least based on reports from Tesla watchers and EV enthusiasts. Over the past days, numerous photos and videos of the new Model 3 across Europe were shared online, from first deliveries in Germany to car carrier trucks filled with the updated Model 3 units in Paris, France.

Following are some of the posts from European EV fans featuring the upgraded Tesla Model 3.

Tesla delivered a total of 435,059 vehicles in the third quarter, which was 6% less than the 466,140 that the company delivered in Q2 2023. Part of this decline was due to the new Model 3, which was not delivered during the third quarter. Considering that the updated Model 3 is now seeing its deliveries in Europe, Tesla may indeed have a solid shot at meeting its ambitious target of delivering around 1.8 million vehicles this 2023.

The Tesla charging team recently announced the opening of the first V4 Superchargers in the United States. The new Tesla V4 Superchargers are located in Sparks, Nevada.

The V4 Supercharger stalls that recently opened in Nevada near Tesla’s Gigafactory in Sparks. The V4 Supercharger stalls were added to the V3 station near Tesla’s gigafactory. The V4 Superchargers had adapters, so non-Tesla vehicles could use them.

Tesla’s V4 Superchargers have been spotted across a few locations in the United States. Earlier this month, V4 Superchargers were spotted in a suburb outside Atlanta, Georgia. The Tesla station was still under construction and surrounded by a chainlink fence.

Besides the one in Georgia, 8 V4 Supercharger stalls were spotted in Wilsonville, Oregon. A few V4 Superchargers were also spotted in Prattville, Alabama.

Earlier this month, Tesla installed the first V4 Supercharger in Asia. It’s on Hong Kong Island at Lee Gard One in Causeway Bay. Tesla Superchargers can cost from HK$3.05 to HK$4.05 per kilowatt-hour between 4 a.m. and 12 midnight.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the European Union (EU) granted Tesla funding of about €149 million to install and expand its Supercharger network in the continent. Tesla plans to use the funds to install or upgrade more than 7,000 Superchargers to V4 stalls.

Tesla’s V4 Superchargers will be instrumental in the rollout of the Cybertruck. One of Tesla’s all-electric pickup trucks was recently spotted charging at a V4 Supercharger stall. Tesla Cybertruck deliveries start next month.

Tesla expects to begin expansions on its Gigafactory in Grünheide, Germany early next year, according to statements made by the company at a recent public forum about the plans.

According to a report from the German publication RBB 24 on Tuesday, a Tesla spokesperson said the company hopes to perform factory expansions to the Brandenburg location starting in the first half of 2024. The expansions will begin with construction to modernize the existing facility and build a water recycling plant before initiating plans to add a second production facility and a battery recycling plant in the following years.

The statements came during a discussion on Monday, in which residents, authorities and company spokespeople gathered in Erkner to discuss the plans for expansions. The discussions officially ended on Tuesday with the agency rejecting objections to the project.

Many attendees criticized Tesla’s changes to application documentation as the process has gone along. However, the State Office for the Environment (LfU) argued that the changes were legal and were only meant to add clarifications or corrections to the details.

Tesla Giga Berlin to adjust wages for employees

The LfU received over 1,000 objections to Tesla’s Giga Berlin expansion plans, primarily concerning the environmental impact and water consumption of the projects, and the discussions included around 100 people, according to RBB 24. The decision officially concludes discussions on water regarding Tesla’s expansion plans, and they’ll now shift to talking about how much noise is generated at the site.

Last week, Brandenburg Minister Axel Vogel weighed in on the water consumption discussions, pointing out that Giga Berlin uses significantly less water than the state has approved. Local companies using much more water include a coal plant, a waste facility, an oil refinery and a nearby asparagus farm.

Tesla submitted expansion plans to the government in July, revealing that it expects the second phase of construction to boost annual production capacity to one million vehicles per year. In addition to increasing vehicle production, the automaker also hopes to reach 100 gigawatt hours of annual battery production at the plant, which could become water-intensive.

In the past, Tesla has also said it would be able to perform the upcoming expansions without increasing water supply. The news also comes after years of criticisms and legal issues lodged at the factory’s water consumption.

Tesla Cybertruck deliveries are set to begin in roughly one month on November 30 at Gigafactory Texas. Although Tesla confirmed this significant detail last week during its Quarterly Earnings Call, the automaker left out a few important details, including available trim levels and pricing.

While NHTSA documents confirmed trim levels just a few days after Earnings last week, pricing still remains up in the air, and there could be several reasons for this.

One could be the uncertainty of market conditions, as Tesla has routinely changed prices in 2023, and announcing a specific cost of each trim now could change by the time deliveries roll around. Another reason is that Tesla could simply be undecided or not ready to announce a price.

This vehicle is so anticipated that it could likely make early reservation holders pay a premium. With uncertainty looming in macroeconomic conditions, the company could try and make the most of the early deliveries.

Tesla confirms Cybertruck deliveries for November 2023

While the Semi was produced and delivered to its first buyers without a price, we don’t expect Tesla to do the same with the Cybertruck. The Semi is an entirely different vehicle class and not something that will be driven on roads by the everyday person.

Even though pricing has remained relatively out of the public realm since Tesla delivered the first Semi units to PepsiCo. last year, there is no way the company would or could do this with the Cybertruck, a vehicle that has amassed over 1 million orders, CEO Elon Musk said on the Call last week.

Nevertheless, there is data out there that could point us in the right direction, giving us a rough estimate of what the Cybertruck could cost based on the price of full-size pickups in 2019 when the vehicle and pricing for the trims available at that time were announced.

Using data from Kelley Blue Book, the cost of the Cybertruck would have theoretically increased by 30.7 percent. In November 2019, a full-size pickup’s average price was $51,140, not including applied consumer incentives. Over the next four years, leading up to 2023, the cost of pickups has increased every year, except for this year, as the average cost of a new truck decreased by about $1,500 from 2022.

The most recent KBB data available is for September 2023, when Full-Size Pickups landed at an average transaction price of $66,841.

When Tesla announced the Cybertruck in 2019, there were three trims: Single, Dual, and Tri-Motor. They were priced at $39,990, $49,990, and $69,990, respectively. With only the Dual and Tri-Motor configurations still standing, we can calculate what the Cybertruck would cost today in a perfect world.

With the 30.7 percent increase in new, full-size pickup prices since 2019, the Cybertruck would, in a perfect world, cost:

  • Dual Motor – from $49,990 in 2019 to – $65,336.93, an increase of $15,346.93.
  • Tri Motor – from $69,990 in 2019 to – $91,476.93, an increase of $21,486.93.

Of course, this is in no way a confirmation of Tesla’s pricing, as it could have many other things factored into the cost, especially as the vehicle has changed in sizing and design over the past four years.

The price of the Cybertruck has been highly speculated since Tesla removed pricing from the Online Design Studio a few years ago, as it was still mulling over potential configurations.

It has not stopped people from posting things on social media stating they have been contacted by Tesla and given a price for their Cybertruck reservations, either.

Tesla will likely start contacting reservation holders soon to set up their delivery, as the first units will be handed over at a delivery event at Gigafactory Texas.

Tesla China may still be allocating a significant portion of its resources to vehicle exports for now, but the company’s domestic sales already seem to be rising. In the week ending October 22, Tesla China saw 8,100 insurance registrations, an 8% increase from the 7,500 registrations that were observed in the previous week

Tesla China does not report its weekly sales figures, though a general idea of the EV maker’s performance in the domestic Chinese market could be inferred from vehicle insurance registration data. Fortunately, industry watchers, as well as some domestic automakers like Li Auto, have taken it upon themselves to aggregate and report China’s weekly vehicle insurance data.

And as per Li Auto’s recent update, Tesla China saw 8,100 vehicle insurance registrations in the week of October 16 to October 22. Considering the insurance registrations from the previous weeks, it would appear that Tesla China has seen around 16,600 insurance registrations in October so far.

Tesla’s China-based factory, Gigafactory Shanghai, currently serves as the company’s primary vehicle export hub. It is also the sole factory in Tesla’s arsenal that is capable of producing the Model 3 Highland for now. Considering that the upgraded Model 3 has been launched in multiple countries, Giga Shanghai would be very busy this Q4 addressing the global orders for the newly revamped all-electric sedan.

Tesla China’s export efforts for the upgraded Model 3 are evident in recent drone flyovers of the Shanghai Nangang Terminal, where the EV maker typically gathers its vehicles before they are exported to foreign territories. A recent drone flyover from longtime Tesla watcher Wu Wa suggests that another batch of upgraded Model 3 sedans will soon be leaving China for foreign markets.

Tesla has been performing well in China despite the company’s sales largely coming from just two vehicles — the domestically produced Model 3 sedan and the Model Y crossover. As per data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla was able to sell 74,073 Giga Shanghai-made vehicles in September. From this number, 43,507 were delivered in China, and 30,566 were exported.
