Back in December, Tesla confirmed that its energy business had completed over half a million installations of solar panels and Solar Roof systems. This was a notable milestone, equal to ~4 GW of clean energy, but Tesla is not done, as its energy products like the Solar Roof are yet to see a ramp comparable to the company’s electric vehicles.

To help ramp its Solar Roof installations, Tesla needs people to install them. And while the company is growing its own Solar Roof installation teams, Tesla has also partnered with certified installers to serve areas that it cannot accommodate for now. In the company’s recent 10-k filing, Tesla highlighted the need for more personnel as the Solar Roof ramp continues.

“We continue to seek to improve our installation capabilities and price efficiencies for Solar Roof. As these product lines grow, we will have to maintain adequate battery cell supply for our energy storage products and hire additional personnel, particularly skilled electricians, to support the ramp of Solar Roof,” Tesla noted in its recent 10-K filing.

Seemingly in support of this initiative, Tesla has posted an invitation to those interested in becoming Solar Roof certified installers. As noted by the company, it has already partnered with over 85 companies across the United States to bring the Solar Roof to their respective communities.

“Help us accelerate the transition to sustainable energy by getting certified to install Solar Roof. We’re already partnering with 85+ companies across the US through our Solar Roof Certified Installer program,” Tesla wrote in a Twitter post.

The Tesla Solar Roof is the company’s flagship residential solar product. The company dubs it as a “premium and durable glass roof tile that has integrated solar technology and can power a home with 100% renewable energy.” While Solar Roof tiles function like traditional solar panels, they have the advantage of being designed in such a way that they maintain the aesthetic of a home.

They are also quite durable. Kelly Roofing, a certified installer of Solar Roof systems, noted last year that the Tesla roof of one of its customers from Naples, FL was able to withstand 155 mph winds and a storm surge without needing any replacement tiles after. “It really held up well and we have heard from several more clients with similar experiences. One customer made coffee for the block as the storm went through and everyone else was without power,” the roofing company noted

The Tesla Solar Roof may not inspire as much coverage as the company’s electric cars like the Model 3 and Model Y, but the integrated solar shingles are still a unique flagship product. And if a recent long-term review is any indication, it appears that the Tesla Solar Roof can indeed deliver on its promises, even if it’s handicapped for several months.

Tesla enthusiast and Los Angeles resident Austin Flack had a 9.09 kW Solar Roof installed on his home last year. Flack was quoted $33,749 for his Solar Roof installation, which was about $3,000 more than the cost of a new roof ($12,000) and traditional soar panels ($18,700). In a previous video on his YouTube channel, Flack noted that since his home’s roof had been badly installed anyway, the additional $3,000 for the Solar Roof tiles was worth it.

Tesla estimated that the 9.09 kW Solar Roof installation would produce 8,609 kWh annually, which should be able to cancel out a good chunk of the home’s energy usage. In a follow-up video and long-term review of his Solar Roof, Flack revealed that a year after his integrated solar system was activated, his home had a total energy output of 7,998 kWh. Of that, 67.8% were fed to the grid, and 32.2% were used in the house.

With these numbers in mind, Flacks’ Solar Roof tiles were able to generate 93% of the energy production that Tesla estimated. As the homeowner noted in his recent video, however, there was a perfectly good reason behind his Solar Roof’s 7% underperformance. See, 2020 was not just insane due to the pandemic; it was also a year that saw California dealing with some notable wildfires. This resulted in the Solar Roof being caked in thick ash for about five months until it was cleaned out by professionals in January 2021.

Considering that the Solar Roof was able to hit 93% of its goal despite being handicapped by a layer of ash for five months, the system’s overall figures remain very impressive. This becomes even more notable if one were to look at the cost savings that the Solar Roof provided. As per Flack, the home’s electricity bill was $2,245 the year before the Solar Roof was installed. With the Solar Roof in place, the home’s bill was only $152.62, including fees. That’s a total annual savings of $2,088, or 93%.

Watch the Tesla Solar Roof’s long-term review and real-world use results in the video below.

The Tesla story would not be complete without the company’s slew of skeptics, many of whom have taken a definitive stance against the electric car maker over the years. Among these skeptics are Tesla short-sellers, some of whom are part of a group that calls themselves the “Shorty Air Force” due to their frequent flyovers of the electric car maker’s sites. A recent flyover from this group has turned in some interesting, if not ironic, results.

During a recent flyover of one of Tesla’s Fremont sites, @paul91701736, a TSLAQ member, was able to photograph some new roof tiles that were being installed on what appears to be a test home. The tiles observed by the TSLAQ member featured a brownish color, which is a different shade from the textured Solar Roof V3 tiles that Tesla has been installing across the United States.

Credit: @paul91701736/Twitter

True to form, the TSLAQ member claimed on Twitter that the tiles Tesla was setting up on the apparent test homes were non-solar and that “there is no Solar Roof.” This is entirely expected considering the longstanding belief of the TSLAQ member that the electric car maker is involved in fraudulent activity. However, behind this conspiracy theory lies the fact that Tesla seems to be in the process of testing out new Solar Roof variants.

Interestingly enough, the newly-spotted Solar Roof tiles in the Fremont test homes seemed identical in size and shape as the textured V3 glass tiles that Tesla introduced in late 2019. This was despite the newly-spotted tiles having a brownish shade, making them quite similar in color as the “Tuscan” PV tiles that Elon Musk announced during the Solar Roof’s initial unveiling in 2016.

The recent observations from the TSLAQ member’s flyover of the Fremont solar test homes suggest that the electric car maker may very well be looking to release more variants of the Solar Roof in the near future. Elon Musk, after all, noted last year that 2021 would be the year of the Solar Roof. Offering new variants of the solar-integrated roofing material would help Tesla accomplish this goal.

When Elon Musk unveiled the Solar Roof’s first iteration in 2016, he announced that Tesla Energy would be offering four variants of the integrated PV tiles. These include Tuscan, Slate, smooth, and textured tiles. Since then, Tesla has only ramped and released the Solar Roof’s textured tiles. With this in mind, the Solar Roof still has a lot of room to grow, and 2021 may very well be its breakout year.

It appears that Tesla is working on some improvements for its Solar Roof tiles that may allow the company to release new variants of the flagship solar product. These potential Solar Roof improvements were discussed extensively in a recently-published patent, which described how the electric car and energy company intends to roll out tiles that feature a better, more seamless appearance.

Tesla’s Solarglass Roof tiles are already among the most aesthetically-pleasing PV systems in the market. A Solar Roof installation involves the setup of both PV and non-PV roof tiles, and according to Tesla, this could present some issues. Since some tiles do not have solar cells in them, there will be some angles or times when it is possible to distinguish which tiles have solar cells and which do not.

Credit: Patentscope

Tesla described this issue in the background of its patent, titled “System and Method for Improving Color Appearance of Solar Roofs” and published on February 11, 2021.

“When viewed from a shallow angle (e.g., when the roof is viewed from the street), the dark-colored photovoltaic structures can become visible. The color contrast between the photovoltaic structures and the glass cover can create a scene that is not aesthetically pleasing… Although the non-PV roof tiles can include similar glass covers as those of the PV roof tiles, the absence of embedded photovoltaic structures can result in the non-PV roof tiles having a different color appearance than that of the PV roof tiles.”

Tesla notes that these issues are due to several factors, including tiny imperfections during the Solar Roofs’ manufacturing process or the fact that PV roof tiles tend to look different when viewed under different lighting and at different viewing angles. According to Tesla, there are ways to get around these challenges, such as adopting a robust color-management scheme and some adjustments in the Solar Roof tiles’ manufacturing line.

Credit: Patentscope

“First, to reduce the color contrast within a PV roof tile, the PV roof tile can encapsulate polycrystalline-Si-based photovoltaic structures. By controlling the size and pattern of the surface texture of the polycrystalline-Si-based photovoltaic structures, one can reduce the “glow” of the photovoltaic structures. While keeping the front cover of the roof tile transparent, the back surface of the back cover can be coated with a layer of paint that matches the color of the textured surface of the photovoltaic structures to reduce the color contrast within the PV roof tile. A similar paint layer can also be deposited onto the back surface of the non-PV roof tiles.”

“As a result, the color appearance of the PV and non-PV roof tiles can be quite similar. Moreover, when assembling the PV roof tiles, the embedded photovoltaic structures are fed into the production line following a predetermined color pattern such that a majority of PV roof tiles contains solar cells of a similar color and PV roof tiles of different colors are evenly or randomly mixed to prevent clustering of colors on a roof.”

Through these methods, Tesla noted that it would be able to create Solar Roof tiles that feature much less “glow” than typical integrated PV systems. The patent also covered how reactive ion etching (RIE) techniques could be utilized to create textured PV roof tiles. These invoke images of the various Solar Roof variants that Elon Musk unveiled in 2016, which included textured tiles that mirrored the appearance of materials like slate and clay.

Credit: Tesla

“The surface of a polycrystalline-Si-based solar cell can be textured using a reactive ion etching (RIE) technique. In further embodiments, the feature size of the RIE-textured surface can be less than 1 micron (i.e., 0.5 micron or less). In alternative embodiments, the surface of the solar cells can have pyramid texturing with the base width of the pyramids being less than 1 micron (e.g., 0.7 micron or less). Compared to the textured surface of a monocrystalline-Si-based solar cell, the RIE-textured surface of the polycrystalline-Si solar cells can have improved surface uniformity. As a result, the PV roof tiles can have reduced color flop and glow.”

“In alternative embodiments, reducing the cell glow can be achieved through specifically designed anti-reflection coating. This specially designed anti-reflective coating (AR) on a monocrystalline-Si-based solar cell surface can include materials with a higher refractive index than a conventional AR coating (e.g., an indium tin oxide (ITO) coating). More precisely, the specifically designed AR coating can include a layer of SiNx or a SiOxNy /SiNy double layer structure. As a result, the cell glow can be reduced by three- to eightfold with low (e.g., less than 5%) power loss.”

Elon Musk has stated that 2021 will be a key year for the Solar Roof, with the CEO noting that its potential would be evident this year. Considering the company’s ongoing rollout of the integrated PV system and the development of better Solar Roof designs, it may only be a matter of time before more customers of Tesla’s flagship residential solar product would have more design options available.

Tesla’s Solar Roof V3 will top off houses in Lauderdale County’s smart neighborhood. Mississippi Power and Southern Company teamed up to to build the world’s first smart neighborhood named Enzor Place.

“Mississippi Power uses the most advanced technologies to offer creative energy solutions that make our customers’ lives easier every day. This smart neighborhood is designed to simplify homeowners’ lives and give them more control over their home and energy use,” said Mississippi Power President and CEO Anthony Wilson.

Phase 1 of the Lauderdale County smart neighborhood will have approximately 45 houses, which accounts for nearly 50% of the homes projected to complete the project. There are a total of 100 to 150 homes planned for the full development of Enzor Place. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2021.

Tesla already helped Mississippi install Solar Roof V3 in Hattiesburg on a Habitat for Humanity home. Mississippi Power is using the Hattiesburg home to see how Tesla Solar Roof performs in southeast Mississippi.

Cross Roofing, a certified Solar Roof installer, finished installing Tesla’s smart roof tiles on the Habitat for Humanity home in less than three days, according to Mississippi Power. Tesla’s Global Head of Commercial Energy RJ Johnson said that the company was getting closer to shortening Solar Roof V3 installation during the third-quarter earnings call.

“Solar Roof is especially exciting as we’ve gained significant experience over the last year in the installation process, which is a key enabler to scale the business. We’ve recently demonstrated our ability to complete Solar Roof installation in just one day,” Johnson said. “Please note, this still requires one to two days to remove the existing roof and prepare it for the Solar Roof installation. Clearly, there will be a range of installation times based on size, complexity, weather and other factors.”

Keeping with the theme of the neighborhood, Enzor place homes will be equipped with smart home automation, smart appliances and other energy efficient equipment. Besides Solar Roof tiles, Tesla Powerwalls—the company’s residential storage batteries—will be installed in Lauderdale’s smart houses.

In TSLA’s last earnings call Johnson said there was strong demand for Powerwalls as more people sought “increased reliability and backup home generation.” “We have a very large backlog of Powerwall orders, and we continue to invest to increase capacity to fulfill customer orders,” Johnson stated

Tesla Energy seems primed to make big waves in the next few years with its growing array of products. Tesla has already seen success in Australia with the Megapack and Powerpack. Solar Roof V3 could be another successful venture for Tesla’s Energy division. The company seems to be preparing to release Solar Roof worldwide next year. Originally, the company hoped to roll out Solar Roof V3 internationally by the end of 2020, but COVID may have hampered its plans.

Tesla took a while before it was able to start a serious ramp of its Solar Roof tiles, but it appears that the wait will be worth it. As the electric car maker continues to expand its Solar Roof installations in the United States, it is starting to become evident that the aesthetically-pleasing solar shingles are a bargain in its class. At its current prices, Tesla’s Solar Roof presents savings compared to high-end roof options plus a traditional solar system.

The Tesla Solar Roof is actually one of the least expensive in its class of building-integrated PV options. While it’s true that the Solar Roof’s competitors are fewer than, say, the Model 3’s rivals in the EV segment, the flagship shingles do have some competition. These include DeSol’s Power Tiles, as well as the Luma Solar Tiles, both of whom adopt the same concept as the Tesla Solar Roof. The Solar Roof undercuts both competitors in price.

The Tesla Solar Roof is estimated to cost about $2.11 per installed watt, as noted by Green Building Advisor. This is far more affordable than the price of the DeSol Power Tiles, which stand at about $7 per installed watt. Even the Luma Solar Tiles, which are closer in appearance to Tesla’s Solar Roof V3, command a price of about $4.50 per installed watt. But this is not all, as the Solar Roof could be a reasonable alternative to a setup that involves traditional roofing materials and conventional solar panels as well.

A rough comparison outlined in a previous webinar from Solar Oregon estimates that replacing an entire 2,000 square-foot roof with Tesla Solar Roof tiles will cost about $42,500. This is more expensive than installing a regular asphalt-shingle roof with a traditional racked solar system, but it is more affordable when compared to more premium materials like metal, slate, and tiles combined with a conventional solar array.

This was highlighted earlier this year by Tesla owner-enthusiast Ben Sullins, who estimated that a 9.2 kW Solar Roof system will cost about $56,000. And while a standard shingle roof with a 9.2 kW PV system will likely cost just around $42,000, premium roofing materials with solar panels are far more expensive. Sullins estimated that a metal roof with a comparable PV system will cost about $70,000, a tile woof with a 9.2 kW solar system will cost about $111,000, and a slate roof with traditional panels will set back homeowners around $134,000.

With this in mind, and with Tesla’s tendency to keep innovating, there is a good chance that the Solar Roof will get even more affordable in the near future. At an estimated $2.11 per installed watt, after all, the Solar Roof is already a disruptor in its segment, and it is already taking steps to get closer to the costs of conventional roofing materials plus solar panels. Granted, this disruption is yet to become evident as the Solar Roof is only available in some zip codes of 16 US states today, but the following year will likely be exciting for the flagship solar product.

This was highlighted by Elon Musk during Tesla’s Q3 2020 earnings call. When asked about that ramp of the flagship product, Musk noted that the potential of the Solar Roof will be evident in 2021. “I think a future where we’ve got beautiful roofs generating energy that are tough and resilient and better in every way than a regular roof and alive with energy, that’s the future we want. Solar Roof is a killer product. This will become obvious next year,” Musk said.

Tesla has donated Solar Roof tiles to power the Buffalo Heritage Carousel at Canalside, Buffalo, New York. Thanks to the electric car maker, the iconic waterfront carousel will now be powered by the sun, bringing wholesome fun entertainment to families for generations to come.

The Solar Roof tiles Tesla donated will be shipped from its Gigafactory located in New York, Buffalo. According to the capital campaign director of Buffalo Heritage Carousel, Inc., estimates for a solar roof for the carousel was around $150,000. Tesla did not place a price on the Solar Roof tiles that it donated, reported Buffalo News.

Buffalo Heritage Carousel, Inc. was formed with the purpose of bringing a solar-powered carousel to Buffalo’s revitalized waterfront, Canalside. Its mission page states that the non-profit organization’s main goal is to “provide entertainment and education about renewable energy technologies in a way that stimulates life-long learning” about the environment and natural resources.

“With the support of Tesla, this rare and historic carousel will be powered by the sun and offer a new family recreational and educational attraction located along the boardwalk. We are so proud to be a local showcase for the solar roof tiles that are made in Buffalo, New York,” said the president of the non-profit organization, Laurie Hauer-LaDuca.

Tesla’s Solar Roof tiles will provide a rather futuristic element to Canalside’s vintage De Angelis carousel, which was designed and built in 1924 by Spillman Engineering. Assemblyman Sean Ryan, who provided $600,000 in state funds to help restore the carousel, reached out to Tesla and urged the company to get involved with the project.

“This winter, I discussed the Buffalo Heritage Carousel project with the people at Tesla and told them it would be a great demonstration of a product made in Buffalo. I’m so glad people will get to see the fruits of their taxpayer investments–a beautiful carousel powered by a Solar Roof made three miles down the road,” Ryan said.

Currently, work on the vintage Solar Roof-powered carousel is ongoing, with local artists and artisans recently completing the restoration of the 34 animals in the carousel. Work has now begun on the carousel’s rounding board paintings, interior scenery panels, and custom-carved chariots. The ride’s frame and mechanism are currently being restored by an Ohio-based company as well.

The Tesla Solar Roof-powered carousel is expected to be operational by Memorial Day weekend.

Tesla is currently operating a Gigafactory in Buffalo, New York. The facility, once dubbed as Gigafactory 2, produces Solar Roof tiles and the company’s Supercharger V3 stalls.

A recent video posted by Weddle and Sons Roofing has revealed how fast a 4,000 sq.ft. (about 372 sq.m) roof could be replaced with Tesla Energy’s Solar Roof tiles. The roofing company installed a sizeable 15kW Tesla Solar Roof system on a Topeka, Kansas house. The entire installation, including PV tiles, glass tiles, and flashings, took a total of four days to complete.

The Friday before Weddle and Sons Roofings installed Tesla Solar Roof, the existing roof and dry-in with double-layer Firestone underlayment was torn off the house. Based on the roofing company’s description, tearing off the existing roof seemed to take only one day.

In total, the 15kW Tesla Solar Roof installation, covering 4,000 sq.ft. (about 372 sq.m) seemed to take only five days, including the tear-down of the old roof. For comparison, it usually takes several days to install a new roof, depending on the material used.

According to amconstruct.com, the estimated time for roof installations are as follows:

  • Wooden Shingles – 3 – 4 days
  • Slate Tiles and Shingles – 6 – 7 days
  • Asphalt Shingles – 1 – 2 days
  • Concrete Tiles and Shingles – 8 – 9 days

Elon Musk announced the release of Tesla Solar Roof Version 3 during the EV automaker’s Q3 earnings call in 2019. Tesla scaled-up production of its Solar Roof at Gigafactory New York once Version 3 was ready.

Installation for the latest iteration of Solar Roof steadily picked up at the beginning of this year, before COVID broke out. In February, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the company was planning to ramp Solar Roof installation across the United States.

Along with the announcement, Musk included a link to Tesla’s Solar Roof Team page, subtly inviting people to apply for the company’s open positions for roofers, installers, and electricians. Musk has stated in the past that Tesla will need more manpower (i.e. roofers, installers, and electricians) to ramp Solar Roof installation.

COVID ultimately stalled some of Tesla Energy’s progress with production and installation of Solar Roof V3. However, Elon Musk and the rest of the Tesla team remained positive that Solar Roof installation could get back up and running despite the pandemic.

“And internally, we want to have at least 1,000 Solar Roof install teams with — and taking a week or perhaps a little less than a week to do an install, which gets you 1,000 a week roof installations. We see demand is good. Production is good. So it’s really all about the install,” said Elon Musk during the Q1 2020 earnings call.

The CEO also talked about Solar Roof’s rising demand globally. He alluded to expanding Tesla Solar Roof installations internationally by the end of the year back in February 2020 before the pandemic hit.

“And then like I said, also build out the training, the very diverse group of companies in the roofing industry to also install Solar Roof that, I think will scale — allow us to scale far beyond 1,000 a week. We’re also seeing a lot of interest outside of North America. So we do expect this to be a product that is international and actually seeing a tremendous amount of interest from China on the Solar Roof. So we’re confident, this will be a very significant product for the Company over time,” Musk said.

Tesla is poised to expand its Solar Roof product into international markets. The California-based company has submitted a Solar Roof patent with the European Patent Office.

The patent, titled “Packaging for Solar Roof Tiles,” outlines the casing structure of a single solar roof tile from Tesla. Although this patent was already filed in the United States previously, it has not been submitted to the European Patent Office.

The patent filing seems to be indicative of CEO Elon Musk’s wishes to hit the international market with Tesla’s Solar Roof later this year. The patent’s description explores the makeup of a solar roof tile module, indicating that the assembly includes “a plurality of solar roof tiles positioned side by side and one or more tile spacers. The tiles are electrically and mechanically coupled to each other.”

In the United States, Tesla’s Solar Roof ramp reached peak levels according to the company’s Q1 2020 Update Letter. Weekly production of the Solar Roof at the company’s Giga New York Facility in Buffalo exceeded 4 MW, or enough for 1,000 homes.

The ramp of Solar Roof will require an increased production rate in Giga New York as Musk did indicate that the initial orders from European customers would be fulfilled by the company’s solar manufacturing plant in the US. This strategy could change in the future depending on the demand for the Solar Roof in European markets.

The Solar Roof holds many advantages for owners that choose to utilize it for their residential energy needs. Not only is the system capable of capturing energy from the sun, but the tiles themselves are aesthetically pleasing as well. While practical, traditional solar panels do not fit the typical aesthetic needs of some homeowners, which could ultimately steer people away from using them.

From an economical standpoint, Tesla solar products have been compared to a money machine by Musk. “With the new lower Tesla pricing, it’s like having a money printer on your roof if you live (in) a state with high electricity costs,” the CEO said on Twitter. “Still better to buy, but the rental option makes the economics obvious.”

As the cost of installing solar drops in the United States by as much as 70% in the last decade, more and more homeowners in the US are considering a switch to greener energy. At the forefront of Tesla’s push into residential solar is its flagship Solarglass roof, which are essentially solar cells that look like standard roofing tiles. Yet, inasmuch as Tesla’s Solarglass tiles have caught numerous headlines in the past, many questions about the product, such as its durability, installation process, and real cost, remain.

Los Angeles, California-based Austin Flack is one of the first consumers to get a Tesla Solarglass Roof. In a recent video shared on YouTube, Flack decided to share his first impressions about his Tesla Solarglass experience.

“We placed our order in early November and were scheduled for installation in mid-December, but rainy weather pushed installation into January. Unfortunately, the federal rebate fell from 30% in 2019 to 26% in 2020, but Telsa was kind enough to give us a 4% discount to make up the difference,” Flack wrote on the description of his review on YouTube.

COST OF TESLA SOLARGLASS ROOF

Prior to the announcement of Tesla about the latest version of the company’s flagship solar product in October 2019, Flack and his wife thought of getting Tesla solar panels but they discovered that their roof, which measures 1,745 sq.ft., wasn’t properly designed and installed.

The couple decided to compare the cost of getting a new composite roof plus the Tesla solar panel array they need. Estimates for the composite tile roof ranged roughly between $9,000 and $12,000. Meanwhile, Tesla calculated that their Los Angeles home would need a system size of around 9.087 kW with some room for energy needs to grow. The quote from Tesla for the Solarglass Roof is $33,749 after rebates. This price is about $3,000 more expensive than the cost of getting a composite tile roof with the equivalent solar panel array setup.

According to Flack, they went for the Solarglass Roof and found the price reasonable “given the enhanced aesthetics of solar glass and how much value it might add to our home.”

SOLARGLASS ROOF INSTALLATION

Installation of the Solarglass Roof started on Jan. 6 and took 7 days including removal of the old roof, installation of Solarglass tiles, replacement of other roofing elements, and hardware setup.

Flack shared that their new roof is mostly solar tiles with some dummy tiles for the edges and to fit near the vents and pipes. The roof was also raised by about 1.5 inches to have some space for wiring and ventilation.

From the solar tiles, Tesla neatly installed conduit boxes in their attic and directed the power to a DC inverter, shutoff switches, and 200 amp electrical box.

The couple is still waiting for the final approval to turn on the system and promised to post an update video once it’s online.

“For now, we are very happy with the Solar Glass. It’s beautiful. It’s durable. It’s guaranteed for 25 years, and when fully operational it will completely zero out our electrical bill,” Flack said.

TESLA SOLAR ENERGY BUSINESS WILL SHINE IN 2020

Tesla’s solar business had its moments under the cloud and seemingly losing its shine amid rising competition from smaller solar roof installers and lower subsidies for solar panels. With the solar business’ back on the wall, Elon Musk re-aligned and reignited Tesla’s solar push with the promise to ramp up production and aim to install more solar roofs compared to previous years. Musk showed a more cautious side and for most, that was a good thing.

“In the long term, I expect Tesla Energy to be of the same or roughly the same size as Tesla’s automotive sector or business. This is the most underappreciated group. I think it could be bigger, but it’s certainly of a similar magnitude to Tesla Solar. Meaning, if you take Tesla Solar plus battery stuff, Tesla Energy is, I think, the least appreciated element,” Musk said.

At present, Tesla offers $250-incentive for new customers and for people who will refer other buyers.

In December, Tesla also installed canopies for their solar test houses in its Fremont factory, reminiscent of how it used big tents to solve Model 3 production issues. During the same period, Tesla looked to hire more installers to beef up its teams in California, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. In Q3 of 2019, the company deployed about 43MW of solar, about 48% more compared to Q3.
